CALDWELL ZOO

CAMP FORD HISTORIC PARK

US Hwy 271, 0.8 miles north of Loop 323 PHONE: (903) 592-5993 WEBSITE EMAIL     Camp Ford was the largest Confederate Prisoner of War Camp west of the Mississippi River during the American Civil War. The site of the camp is now a public park, managed by the Smith County Historical Society. The park features a kiosk with extensive graphics detailing the history of the camp, a walking trail with interpretive signage, a reconstruction of a POW cabin, and picnic facilities. Open daily, dawn to dusk. FREE admission, but donation suggested.

THE CENTER FOR EARTH & SPACE SCIENCE EDUCATION

It is an especially meaningful place to families who have lost a child because it provides opportunities to have children’s names engraved along the sidewalk, put on a bronze plaque beneath a tree or even on the plaque of a bronze statue. Visitors are encouraged to take a look around and step back in time, remembering the thousands of travelers who passed through this historic structure in the early and mid-1900’s. Listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks, the house is the oldest two-story structure in Smith County. Guided tours take visitors back to the era of an 1850's Southern plantation.

LAKE TYLER RECREATION AREAS

Lake Tyler WEBSITE     The City of Tyler operates five boat ramps and several public parks on the shores of these lakes. The Lake Tyler Marina, located on Lake Tyler West in Concession Area #1, charges a small fee to launch; all other ramps are free. Fritz & Opal's Barge, on the water near Old #2, offers fishing access for a fee, and bank access is available at several locations. Two public ramps and a county-maintained boat launch offer access to Lake Tyler East. Primitive camping is allowed in all city parks on a first-come, first-serve basis.
